Lee, I would like to quibble your assertion that the solstice/lunar eclipse on this year's solstice was the darkest day in 456 years. The darkest day would occur when the Winter Solstice and a New Moon occur. Which, according to a quick google search, happens either 4 times in 59 years or even more frequent than that.
Not to take away from your point on the birth of Christ.

Well, you are probably right. I just read it somewhere in passing and it struck me as being really something. I think perhaps the 456 years had more to do with the occurrence of a lunar eclipse on the winter solstice.
