Ooh, I love Nada Surf. Couldn't seem to get into their newest, though, aside from a few songs. I'm sure I'll get it eventually. Loved The Weight is a Gift.
Earlimart is good too. I haven't heard much of the Avett Brothers, but what I've heard sounds fun.
np: My Morning Jacket - Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. 1 (screw you, Lee Bozeman)

There are a lot of good recommendations floating around here, I'm sure you have more than a few good leads to go on here. I'm into Sigur Rós, but the new one felt a bit weak in my estimation... some nice reinventions, but also some really boring parts.
There are a few records dominating my eardrums lately:
Why? - Alopecia (don't be playing this one around the kids)
-- Fantastically dense and dark and completely catchy through and through. Start with either "Simeon's Dilemma" or "Fatalist Palmistry" and see if you're into it at all.
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
-- A heck of a lot better than Coldplay's newest; baritone vocals, nice arrangements, really nice production. Start with "One Day Like This" or "Grounds for Divorce"
Townes Van Zandt - Townes Van Zandt, or Our Mother The Mountain
-- A poet with zero equals. Just love his stuff. Every bit of it. Start with "Waiting 'Round to Die" "She Came And She Touched Me" "None But The Rain" "Rake" or any other song for that matter.
I would also give my blessing to: M83 - Saturdays=Youth The Twilight Singers - Powder Burns The Weepies - Hideaway Nada Surf - Lucky

Overall, there are a lot of "good" redords out there but not very many great ones. Most singers are decent but not inspiring. ... On the way to work this morning I listened to Low's "Trust". Now that's a record. "I am the Lamb and I am a dead man." Just wonderful. Lee So true. When I first heard that line on Low's trust album, it sent shivers down my spine. I like "Drums and Guns" too, but man that will get you down... even more than a typical Low record. I know I'm late in this discussion, but if you can handle classical, try Anja Lechner and pianist Vassilis Tsabropoulos record, "Chants, Hymns and Dances." Still waiting for a new Fugazi record - do you like "The Evens"? They have a somewhat new album that is pretty good. Maybe some good old Hoover will do the trick Listening to Sun Kil Moon's April album now and so far liking what I'm hearing. I'm a long time RHP fan though so I'm sure that helps. Take care and God Bless. I haven't been too good at staying in touch lately - been spending my time trying to get off the grid +s

Many good ideas. I have looked into a lot of these at this point though the only thing I have purchased is Sigur Ros which I am very fond of. Trying out Sun Kil Moon because of a few recommendation but it doesn't move much yet. Everyone seems so interested in writing songs that have been written before. I understand the nature of pop music but there are so many bands that just kill you with chord changes that are so typical (me being one of them) that it just leaves me bored. And where are the singers that have something to say? Few and far between. If you don't tell me why the world is the way it is, then at least entertain me while I wait for the answer. Bored, bored, and bored.

Recent things that tickled my ear:
Son Lux: At War With Walls and Mazes Not sure how to describe this but I think that people who like ATBB (especially the more electronic demos) would like this. Not sure if that means you would like it or not Lee.
A. Armada: Anam Cara Post rock by math rockers. Like Explosions In the Sky but smarter.
Vampire Weekend: Vampire Weekend One of my favorite discoveries on eMusic. Smart pop with organ without being twee.

I have had both Son Lux and Vampire Weekend records for some time and I like them both but for different reasons. Lyrically, the Vampire Weekend record is really interesting. They create a really defined sense of place with the images and sound. Musically, the Son Lux sound is quite good but a little dull vocally. But good nonetheless. I'll have to look into A. Armada. Not familiar. I did download the last Dan Deacon record last night which had some appeal. We'll see how that holds up.

I thought of another recommendation today that is a few years old. The band is called Idaho and very few people have heard of them even in more indie circles. However, everyone I know who has head of them owns all their records. I like the Lone Gunman, but those who have been listening longer seem to say Alas is the best album. Also the song "To Be The One" off of Hearts of Palm is in my top 5 songs all time. The first time I heard it and he went into the chorus I almost cried it was so perfect.

some new finds I've been into recently:
Fan Modine - Homeland (smallish grandiose bedroomy pop) Republic Tigers - Keep Color (KC's own!) The National - Boxer (took a while to grow on me, but I'm still not convinced it's worthy of pitchfork's 8.6) Bishop Allen - the Broken String (nice upbeat indie folk pop) Bowerbirds - Hymns for a Dark Horse (kitchen sinky indie folk, though i always get worn out before the record finishes. is that my fault or theirs? I don't know)

Steven, I am fairly one dimensional but I will try out your suggestion. A couple of decent records I downloaded recently are from Bon Iver and Dan Deacon. I always wait until the hype has died down but these are worthwhile.
On another note, I hate downloads. I want real records. It's as if they are almost not real. Sorrow, sorrow.

Lee, I'm not really a fan of either of those, but they are both available on vinyl!
